Starting or ending a Northern European cruise from Amsterdam? The Netherlands has four major cruise terminals — and getting between them and Schiphol Airport with luggage isn't trivial. This 2026 guide covers every port, distance, transfer time, and the cheapest way to move a group of 2-50 passengers with luggage.

The 4 main cruise ports near Amsterdam

Most cruises departing from "Amsterdam" actually use one of four ports, depending on the ship size:

  • 🚢 Amsterdam PTA (Passenger Terminal Amsterdam) — central, smaller ships
  • 🚢 IJmuiden Felison Cruise Terminal — bigger ships, 30 min from Amsterdam
  • 🚢 Rotterdam Cruise Port — major hub, 75 min from Amsterdam/Schiphol
  • 🚢 Antwerp Cruise Terminal (Belgium) — for Rhine river cruises, 1h45 from Schiphol

Amsterdam PTA — Central, easy access

The Passenger Terminal Amsterdam is in the heart of Amsterdam, right next to Centraal Station. It hosts ocean cruises (smaller ships) and many river cruises.

  • 📍 Address: Piet Heinkade 27, 1019 BR Amsterdam
  • 🛬 From Schiphol: 25 km (30-45 min by road)
  • 💶 Transfer cost: €40-65 V-Class (1-7 pax), €110 Sprinter (8-19 pax)
  • 🧳 Luggage: easy — terminal has full luggage handling

💡 Many cruise lines partner with us for group transfers from Schiphol. Ask your cruise line if "Amsterdam Bus" is on their preferred transfer list.

IJmuiden Felison Terminal — biggest ships

Most large ocean cruises (P&O, Princess, Royal Caribbean) sail from IJmuiden because the locks are wider than Amsterdam's center. It's 25 km north-west of Amsterdam.

  • 📍 Address: Sluisplein 73, 1975 AG IJmuiden
  • 🛬 From Schiphol: 30 km (35-50 min)
  • 🏨 From Amsterdam centre: 25 km (30-45 min)
  • 💶 Transfer cost: €45-70 V-Class, €120 Sprinter, €200 Tourismo for 20+ pax
  • ⏰ Best to arrive 3 hours before sailing time

Rotterdam Cruise Port — major hub

Rotterdam handles major cruise lines including Holland America and Cunard. The terminal sits next to the iconic SS Rotterdam museum ship.

  • 📍 Address: Wilhelminakade 698, 3072 AR Rotterdam
  • 🛬 From Schiphol: 70 km (60-90 min by road)
  • 🏨 From Amsterdam: 80 km (75-100 min)
  • 💶 Transfer cost: €130-180 V-Class, €240 Sprinter, €450 Tourismo
  • 🚄 Train alternative: 1.5 hours with one change, €18 pp

Antwerp Cruise Terminal (Belgium)

For Rhine and Belgian cruises. About 1h45 from Schiphol by road.

  • 📍 Address: Schipperskaai 1, 2000 Antwerpen
  • 🛬 From Schiphol: 165 km (1h 45 min)
  • 💶 Transfer cost: €240-310 V-Class, €390 Sprinter

What to look for in a cruise transfer service

Cruise transfers have unique requirements that most regular taxi services struggle with:

  • 🧳 Lots of luggage — 2 large cases per passenger minimum
  • ⏰ Strict timing — you must arrive 2-3 hours before sailing
  • 👥 Group sizes — couples to 50-person tour groups
  • 🚛 Big luggage groups → may need our Box Truck add-on
  • ✈️ Disembarkation can be staggered — plan for delays
  • 🌧️ Weather contingencies — Dutch storms can affect arrivals

Group cruise transfers (for 20+ passengers)

For groups of 20-50 (tour groups, family reunions), we use the Mercedes Tourismo (49 seats, 45 luggage capacity) or Setra (50 seats). For very large luggage loads, we add a dedicated Box Truck to carry suitcases separately.

Group bookings include free flight tracking, meet-and-greet at Schiphol arrivals with the group name on a sign, and direct drop-off at the cruise terminal door (no hauling cases through parking lots).

Frequently Asked Questions

How early should I arrive at a Dutch cruise terminal?

2-3 hours before sailing time is standard for ocean cruises. River cruises often allow 1 hour earlier check-in. We factor this into your pickup time automatically when you book.

Can you handle large group transfers (20+ passengers)?

Yes — our Mercedes Tourismo seats 49 passengers and our Setra seats 50, both with large under-floor luggage compartments. For overflow luggage, we add a Box Truck.

Do you do post-cruise transfers (port to airport)?

Yes — disembarkation transfers are our most common cruise booking. We track your ship's arrival time and adjust the pickup automatically if delayed.

What if my flight from Schiphol is delayed and I miss the cruise embarkation window?

Cruise lines won't wait, unfortunately. We strongly recommend arriving in Amsterdam at least one day before sailing. We can also offer overnight hotel transfers.

Are cruise transfers more expensive than airport transfers?

For Amsterdam PTA and IJmuiden — about the same as a Schiphol-Amsterdam transfer. For Rotterdam and Antwerp, distances are longer, so prices are higher (typically €130-310 for V-Class).
